Working with partners, SOWTech identifies needs relating to waste management issues in aid and development situations. We then work with the partners to design products and processes to alleviate those needs. Examples of some of the "needs" for which SOWTech have developed innovative designs and products are given below.
To provide a system to capture and treat human waste in emergency aid situations such as natural disasters or man-related emergencies.
Sanitation is one of the big unsolved problems in developing countries and Aid situations. Inadequate or more often non-existent sanitation can cause more deaths than the initial disaster. There has been a lot of work been done on the development of low cost acceptable toilets but not on the treatment of the contents of the toilets. This is where SOWTech’s expertise lies and where we can help the most.
To find a way to dispose of digested sludge material from anaerobic digestion at the lowest cost and with minimal risk to humans and the environment
To develop a method of deactivating pathogens in waste to make the waste water safe for reuse.
To produce a clean fuel for cooking with to reduce the problems caused by inhalation of wood smoke
To increase crop yield by the use of pasteurised waste water as a liquid fertiliser and for irrigation.
